Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl with a new prompt each week. This week’s prompt is Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype (and did you make the right choice?)
What hyped books do you regret reading the most?
Alyssa
Remarkably Bright Creatures was such a long wait through the library. When it finally came available for me, I did not read it. We’d just experienced the loss of a pet and I couldn’t make myself read this. I have no intentions of picking it back up, so I’m still actively avoiding this one. No regrets.
Meagan
I have read Remarkably Bright Creatures and I did love it, but it definitely has some tough themes if you aren’t in the right headspace. I hope you’ll read it at some point, Alyssa! Marcellus is a joy and I think the book still has the HEA we both love!
The first book that came to mind for me with this prompt was Fourth Wing. I saw so many conflicting opinions on this one, and because of that I’ve avoided it. Alyssa, I know you’ve read this one, did I make the right choice?
Alyssa
I did read it! I’m glad I did and will finish the series. In fact, I thought Iron Flame was better than Fourth Wing. Normally cliffhangers drive me nuts, but Yarros got my attention and I’m looking forward to the next book.
That said… Meagan, I think you made the right choice. I don’t see you enjoying this one enough to add it to your TBR list.
Meagan
Oh good, I’ll remain in the not cool crowd. You know I struggle with series at baseline!
Unpopular opinion, but I started and haven’t finished the ACOTAR series. I read the first two books, but I DNF the 3rd, A Court of Wings and Ruin. I’m not sure if I’ll pick it back up to finish the series. I enjoyed the first two, but this one I got stuck on.
Alyssa
It is so rare for Meagan and I to have conflicting opinions on books and this is two in one post.
I read the entire ACOTAR series and thoroughly enjoyed it. But even I’ve maybe had my fill of SJM for a while. Which is why I have STILL not read House of Flame and Shadow.
Meagan
OK, now for one I did read that was hyped. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. This was a really good book, and I loved the concept, writing, and character development. I would definitely recommend reading it, but it wasn’t 5 stars for me like it was for so many people.
Alyssa
I bought Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow based on Meagan’s recommendation! I’m looking forward to that one.
One hyped book I do regret reading is Lessons in Chemistry. I only read this because it was selected for a book club. I gave it three stars, but I could have happily lived without reading this one.
Meagan
Ugh, we read Lessons in Chemistry for the same book club and the most exciting part for me was painting my nails to match the cover. The story and theme was good and it had so much potential, but I just couldn’t stand this book. I’m glad we’re back to being on the same page (pun intended).
I’ve read Normal People and Conversations with Friends and I won’t read another book by Sally Rooney. I don’t know what it is (and it’s not the lack of quotation marks, but that doesn’t help), I just don’t like her writing or characters. They all hate themselves and are pretty awful humans.
Alyssa
I cannot stress enough how cute Meagan’s nails looked at that book club meeting. I think she should match the cover for every RBF joint review we do. Speaking of…
I avoided the Twisted series for quite some time even though they were available for free through my Kindle Unlimited subscription. They just didn’t call out to me. But Meagan and I decided to start the series for RBF joint reviews and well, I’ll let Meagan chime in…
Meagan
The best thing about the Twisted Series is the way the books smell…(insert cricket sounds). But seriously, and no judgment (because we won’t yuck your yum, ever), but can someone tell us why this is such a loved series?
You can read our reviews, we didn’t hold back, but it was really difficult to like the characters or the love – and I don’t think we are particularly picky romance readers.

Fourth Wing has been on so many lists this week!
I have really seen it everywhere! I will continue to resist reading it.
I love your dialog format!
Your first book is my city read, and a talk with the author tomorrow. But not planning to read it.
I have only read Tomorrow… BEFORE the hype, because I had so loved the author’s previous book.
Well, I didn’t like this one at all. Lots of problems according to me. BUT my review keeps getting tons of views, lol!
My post for today with a twist: https://wordsandpeace.com/2024/10/01/top-ten-oldest-books-read-so-far-in-2024/
Thank you! I’ll have to try another book by Zevin so I can compare.
It’s interesting that neither of you liked Lessons in Chemistry!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
I agree with your opinion on Lessons in Chemistry. I only added to my TBR because I found a UK cover in the thrift store. It’s way better than the US cover. But if I had known I wouldn’t enjoy it, I would have left it on the shelf.

I like the way this post read like a full conversation between you two. I sat here imagining that the post was started and saved until the other could respond and add their two cents, and it just went back and forth like that. (I’m sure you two were more efficient with how you built it though).
I hope you have a great week.
Here’s my TTT post if you wish to visit – https://justanothergirlandherbooks.blogspot.com/2024/09/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-bought-because.html
I actually loved Lessons impending Chemistry on Apple TV but I have not read the book. When I watched it, I didn’t realize it was a book until my husband told me. I can see how it might not be a good read based on what I watched.
Would love to hear thoughts on my Top Ten list!
