Don’t let our RBF expressions fool you. We rate nicer than we look, or do we?
We’ve been meaning to work on explaining how we rate for a while. We came up with the following simple, rating scale. This is the overall star scale – with half stars in between (obviously).
For some more in-depth descriptions of ratings we’ve provided check out our reviews.

Alyssa’s Notes
I did not start tracking or rating books I read until 2022. I’m generally on the more generous side of rating. Sometimes I find myself still a little inconsistent with the 3 to 4 star range, meaning I’m more likely to rate an okay book a 4 even when I shouldn’t. But I’m getting better and more discerning. A 5 star book for me is one that brings out a lot of emotions (good or bad) and I can’t stop thinking about. I do not use half stars, as it is simply too much effort for me. I’d never keep them straight.
Since 2022, I’ve read 367 books (not including re-reads).

Meagan’s Notes
I did not start consistently rating books until this year. I loveeee all of Alyssa’s stats. In the past, I’ve only rated things I really loved so I’ll only be sharing some of my 5 star reads. Alyssa is nicer than me with her ratings. I also differ in that I do use the .25 star increment options on StoryGraph – there are many in the same rating for me, but there’s a tiny difference in how much I liked it. I am definitely a mood rater. If the book gave me lots of feelings I tend to rate it higher. I also give a book more “points” if I think it’s incredibly or differently written, has some of my favorite tropes (I love found family), or amazing characters.
Some of my reads that received ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Circe by Madeline Miller
- Together We Will Go by J. Michael Straczynski
- The People We Keep by Allison Larkin
- A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
- Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez
