Top Ten Favorite Book Quotes

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl with a new prompt each week. This week’s prompt is Favorite Book Quotes. If you haven’t already read some of our reviews, we regularly include our favorite quotes from the book, so this was fun for us! We limited ourselves to 5 quotes each and I think we both struggled to narrow it down. Kindle highlights and post it tabs both get a shout out for the creation of this post.

Alyssa

In the meantime, we can deal only with what’s in front of us at this moment in time. We take the next necessary action, and the next. At some point along the line, that next action will feel joyful again.

Katherine May – Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times

I read Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May in 2022. While the book felt a little unpolished, the theme was definitely what I needed at that time. The book wasn’t exactly uplifting, but following two tough years during the COVID19 pandemic and a personal slump, the idea of just hanging in there through the bad was pretty spot on. This quote also reminds me of my favorite from Glennon Doyle – “Just do the next right thing.”

Meagan

I didn’t have the courage to really dislike her, but I knew I wanted to.

Sally Rooney – Conversations with Friends

I did have the courage to dislike this book, but I loved this quote. Speaking of quotes…where are they in this book?

Alyssa

The key to happiness wasn’t being yourself, because what did that even mean? Everyone had many selves. No. The key to happiness was finding the lie that suits you best.

Matt Haig – How to Stop Time

I love this quote. We all adjust our personalities, to one degree or another, depending on the people we are with or the situation we are in. As an extreme introvert, I feel like I fall on the extreme side of this as well. I’m probably masking (extreme) social anxiety by doing this, but whatevs. LOL.

Meagan

I relaxed a little. I had to remember that not everyone overthought everything the way I did. Wouldn’t it be amazing to live like that? To not carry that burden around with you. To not feel constantly overwhelmed and overstimulated and second-guess every little thing.

Abby Jimenez – Yours Truly

I have a list of Abby Jimenez quotes I love, what can I say? This is such an accurate depiction of anxiety and I appreciate it so much. Check out our review of her latest release, Just for the Summer, including our favorite quotes.

Alyssa

Don’t let life happen to you. Have long hard think about what you want and a long, hard look at what you’ve got, and see what syncs. Okay?

Kitty Johnson – Five Winters

I had a hard time deciding what to say about this quote even though I obviously chose it for a reason. I think I just like the reminder to always be conscious of my choices and the actions I take.

Meagan

I had been on the point of asking him to sit but now he could just stand there until he fell over. And I hoped he would.

Diane Freeman – A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder (Countess of Harleigh Mystery, #1)

This entire book was entertaining and I loved the sarcasm and wit of the main character in a time period when it was completely unacceptable and improper to be this way.

Alyssa

Things change, but we stretch and grow and make room for one another.

Our love is a place we can always come back to, and it will be waiting, the same as it ever was.

You belong here.

Emily Henry – Happy Place

Happy Place is my favorite Emily Henry book (I reserve the right to change my mind since I haven’t read Funny Story yet.) and this quote towards the end just pulled all my heartstrings. I’m lucky enough to have a few people in my life that are always there. No matter how long it’s been.

Meagan

“What am I supposed to do without you?” “Live. That’s all. Just live.” “I don’t know if I know how.” “You’ll figure it out,”…

J. Michael Straczyknski – Together We Wil Go

This was my favorite read of 2023. It was such an awesome, multi-media format with a strong mental health theme. It was a dark, sad book (I love these sometimes), and this quote on grief was beautiful to me.

Alyssa

He’d done far too much peopling for one day.

Jenni Bara – The Fall Out

No explanation needed. Hahaha.

Meagan

You keep asking why your work is not enough, and I don’t know how to answer that, because it is enough to exist in the world and marvel at it. You don’t need to justify that, or earn it. You are allowed to just live.

Becky Chambers – A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot, #1)

I adored this book so so much and this quote hit home for me as someone who sometimes struggles with purpose and overthinking. It’s a nice reminder to just be.

  1. I had the same reaction to Wintering.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. Right? Equal parts depressing and uplifting. LOL.

      Thanks for sharing yours!

  2. I think anyone who has worked with the general public can sympathize about enough peopling! One of my coworkers goes on walks during lunch just to get away and decompress — and I hole up in the second/smaller lunchroom in hopes that no one will come there. I just want to sit and read and not be asked any questions at all for an hour!

I went with recent Kindle highlights for mine.

    1. Same! I need that lunch break to be people-free. I read the kindle app from phone, which I’m sure is great for my eyes. LOL.

  3. I feel that Abby Jiminez quote. I have never read her and I think I need to. I see so much love for her books. Also, that Bara quote. LOL.

That quote from Wintering could not be more spot on for the pandemic times.

    Great list!

  8. I love the quote from HAPPY PLACE. That’s how I feel whenever I visit my parents, who still live in the home I grew up in. It’s always home, no matter how long I’ve been away.

    Happy TTT!
