The Guncle Abroad by Steven Rowley is the sequel to The Guncle. I have so many thoughts and feelings about this book, but I’ll try to keep this review a quickie (which Patrick would appreciate).

I adored The Guncle and this sequel did not disappoint. It gets 4.5 stars from me! It follows the story of Patrick and his niece and nephew, Maisie and Grant, 5 years after the first book. Their father is getting remarried and the kids are very upset by this. Patrick takes it upon himself to teach the kids the “Guncle love languages” like the “Guncle rules” in the first book. He makes it his mission to explain and create love languages to the kids in hopes they’ll see and understand their Dad’s relationship and upcoming wedding. This whole journey takes place abroad which adds an extra fun element to the setting. And of course, as this is happening, Patrick is learning some lessons of his own and making new, unexpected, friends.

I adore Steven Rowley’s writing style. He tackles deep, emotional topics with such eloquence and humor. This book had me laughing AND crying, just like the first. Are we getting a Guncle #3? I hope so! I just love these characters and seeing the evolution of the relationships and the individuals (especially the kids!). As someone who takes her aunt role very seriously, I just adore their relationship and his love for them is something I resonate with deeply.

I can’t wait to read the rest of Rowley’s books. Lucky for me, I already own one.

Maybe it fixes itself. Or maybe it doesn’t.  And we make peace with some things that are broken.

Mini Spoiler Alert

My favorite moment from the book is a simple one…Patrick drinking the olive oil thinking it was wine. I laughed out loud. I love the humor Rowley uses – it is just the best.
