Top Ten VERY Strong Emotions

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl with a new prompt each week. This week’s prompt is Books I Had VERY Strong Emotions About.

When I saw this prompt, I told Meagan “hold my hard cider.” I had a hard time narrowing this one down to just 10, so Meagan told me to have at it… which is kind of terrifying since she writes most of our intro paragraphs for Top Ten Tuesday. (She’s probably re-written this for me. LOL.) (Meagan here, I have no notes. 😉)

I’ve listed the five strongest emotions that stood out to me and picked the top 2 books for each. Let me know if you had the same reactions!

Bittersweet
Book cover art for A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley, a Top Ten Tuesday Very Strong Emotions pick.

I feel like I pick a Susanna Kearsley book every Top Ten Tuesday (here and here), but for good reason. I love her use of dual storylines. It’s like two romance books in one. Normally I have a favorite couple in each of her books, but this one is a toss up. In A Desperate Fortune I loved both storylines equally and it still makes me cry after several rereads.

Book cover art for Happy Place by Emily Henry.

I love all of Emily Henry’s books, but Happy Place hit different. I loved experiencing Harriet and Wyn’s story through the dual timeline and I just felt so invested in their relationship and the friend group. It perfectly captures how relationships change over time, but the important ones will never fade.

Angry
Book cover art for In Five Years by Rebecca Serle, a Top Ten Tuesday Very Strong Emotions pick.

I didn’t know much about In Five Years by Rebecca Serle before I read it. This is one where I wish I’d done some reconnaissance. The premise was great and I did like it, but it wasn’t the book I thought it was. And the ending left me so unsatisfied, that I was definitely angry.

Book cover art for The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros.

Apparently it’s the endings that make me angry. The ending of The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros gave me some pretty intense rage. It just didn’t have to end that way! I’m still mad about it.

Devastated
Book cover art for Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren, a Top Ten Tuesday Very Strong Emotions pick.

Love and Other Words was my first book by Christina Lauren. This book… broke me. I’ve enjoyed many of their other books since, but none have compared to the emotions this one evoked. I purchased this book after reading it the first time (from the library), but I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to read it again. This is one I wish I could read for the first time again for those intense feelings.

Book cover art for The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez.

My most devastating book has a pink cover and Happy in the title. Make that make sense. The Happy Ever After Playlist is another book I purchased, but may not be able to reread. This one was heartbreaking. Over and over. Reading The Friend Zone set the stage for Sloan’s story and I’m still not over it. That one hotel scene… sobbing.

Bored
Book cover art for Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney.

Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney takes place over one day, but with flashbacks to Lillian’s past. If this hadn’t been a book club pick I doubt I could have finished it. It just didn’t hold my attention.

It’s Meagan again… I know I’m not part of this post, but HARD AGREE. I couldn’t finish it! Thank you for encouraging me to DNF this one, Alyssa.

Book cover art for The Sanatorium by Sarah Pierce.

For a thriller, The Sanatorium by Sarah Pierce just didn’t keep me in suspense. It wasn’t awful and I’m glad I finished it, but even the twist at the end didn’t entice me to pick up the next one.

Confused
Book cover art for None of this is True by Lisa Jewell, a Top Ten Tuesday Very Strong Emotions pick.

Did she or didn’t she??? Lisa Jewell’s None of This is True was a page-turner for sure. And while I thought I knew what was happening the whole way through, the ending proved me wrong. I still don’t quite know what happened. I liked the continued speculation and had to text Meagan immediately. LOL.

Book cover art for We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart was confusing for a whole different reason. Yes, there’s a huge twist and it was great, but the title never made sense for the book. You have to read the afterword by the author to understand the background that gave context for the title was removed in editing.

  1. I didn’t like The Sanatorium either.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  2. I agree, I thought The Sanatorium was boring too. I had no interest in continuing the series. That’s very interesting about We Were Liars. I’d wondered about the title too, but figured it must have something to do with the twist (that was a stretch though). I haven’t seen the afterword, but I should take a peek.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

    1. Diana, I thought the same thing about We Were Liars! I was going to shrug it off and then read the afterword.

  3. I’ve just started my first Emily Henry and I’m already looking forward to reading more – Happy Place looks and sounds fantastic

    1. How exciting you have all her books still to read! Hope you enjoy.

  4. I love how you shared your feelings and why for these books!

  5. I haven’t read Happy Place yet but I really like Emily Henry’s books. I think she goes a lot deeper emotionally than a lot of writers do. I’m looking forward to that reading that one.

    1. Hope you do enjoy it! Happy Place is not only my favorite of hers, but was my favorite read of 2023.

  6. I enjoy books that are confusing on purpose where you’re along for the ride too but it’s so frustrating when that confusion is accidental lol
